ABOUT CHORLEY SELF DEFENCE CLUB
About Darren Thomas – Instructor
Darren was born in Chorley, Lancashire in 1970. He started Wing Tchun training in 1988 with Principal Coach Nick Smart at Chorley and the Southport boxing gym. Both Darren and his training partner Phil Marrow remember the five nights a week training in Chorley and Manchester as not for the faint-hearted. Although Darren did not have any martial arts background before joining Nick’s club he fed on a diet of Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu films creating an appetite for the real thing. In 1991 he had reached a level of skill and knowledge ready to open his first school at Shepherds Hall in Chorley. 3 years later he opened a second school in Wigan in 1994 at King Street.
In 1996 Nick aspired to create the Autodefence-Wing Tchun head-quarters in his home town of Chorley and invited Darren to become the Head Coach there. To this day Darren coaches the visiting trainees in the evening, after their day’s ‘programming’ with Nick. Trainees travel from all over the world to training here. It was a great honour and a pleasure to be able them develop into coaches themselves.
Darren’s philosophy is: when you do something you love, it never feels like hard work. Practising and mastering Wing Tchun has given him unimaginable opportunities and taken him to locations all over Europe, Hong Kong and Red-China. He has met colleagues of all nationalities with the same passion for the art as his. Darren is married to Jane with three lovely children, Amber, Jordan and Josh.
